Child protection, predictive analytics and privacy

This Radio New Zealand ‘Insight Programme’ explores the New Zealand government’s proposed use of predictive risk modelling to predict the likelihood that a parent will abuse a child.  The programme includes the voice of the RSWs very own Emily Keddell.

This is a very good piece of work. The ethical issues are immense and we shouldn’t leave this to the technocrats. What if we identified this group of families as being disadvantaged and provided them all with a range of services to reduce that disadvantage without the stigma of monitoring them for risk – then we might make some headway. After listening to the programme I am even more convinced that PRM carries too many major disadvantages in its current political frame.
